X-LAM

Cross-Laminated Timber

X-LAM cross-laminated timber (CLT) is composed of cross-wise glued-laminated black spruce boards. The result is a building material high in resistance and stiffness that can easily substitute steel or concrete.

Use

  • Commercial, multi-residential and residential buildings

Design flexibility

Pont Maicasagi : Pont Maicasagi – Rivière Maicasagi (Qc)
  • Cross-laminated timber (CLT) allows for flexible design. It is a new addition to classic engineered wood products available and is used for wall, floor/ceiling and roof applications.
  • Cross-laminated timber can be perfectly combined with other buildings materials (steel, concrete, glass, etc.) in addition to other engineered wood products such as glue-lam, also allows for design flexibility.
  • Excellent dimensional stability due to bi-directional build-up
  • Great span to depth ratios for floors / see technical chart
  • Primarily a structural material that can also be used as a visible element.

Application

Walls - Floors - Roofs

Cost-competitive

Condos Chibougamau : ABCP Architecture – Chibougamau (Qc)
  • Cost savings on foundations: Since wood is six times lighter than concrete, using X-LAM means that foundation will be substantially lighter and less expensive than in a concrete structure.
  • As well as being a structural element, X-LAM also acts as an insulating layer due to its excellent thermal properties. It is the only structural element with this advantage.

Erection speed

  • Installation is independent of any climatic constraints: Time savings due to the use of prefabricated dry timber panels, whereas concrete is an on-site process that requires curing time. X-LAM timber panels arrive on the building site, are quickly installed, and are therefore only exposed to the elements (rain and snow) for a short period of time.
  • X-LAM timber panels are easy to assemble because of the simple screwed or nailed connections, leading to time reduction on the building site. Another advantage is that the erection team can be much smaller and less equipment is required.
  • The result is a structure that is build faster and livable/usable earlier.

Ecology

  • Wood is the only 100% renewable building material
  • 7 MR LEED: The wood used for X-LAM fabrication is FSC certified.
  • 5 MR LEED: The wood used for X-LAM fabrication is harvested near Chibougamau (Quebec).
  • 4.4 QEI LEED: X-LAM panels contain only an insignificant amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC).
  • Carbon footprint reduction
